About Lectra
—
Lectra is the term I use of eLECTRonic (or electric) Artforms.
Originally I coined the term to describe the indeterminate, computer-based compositions I was making, as they invariably used some kind of visual interface which was read as, and became, part of the total experience of the work.
The books here have reversed the hierarchy, with the visual
components driving the work, often with sound/musical accompaniment. However, elements of indeterminacy and hence impermanance (or the idea of an unfixed identity) remain central - I want to make impossible books that change and sing and perform.
The inspiration for this comes from
diverse sources: the illustrations of Tenniel, Ardizzone and Mervyn Peake, the enigmas of Borges, the paintings of Sigmar Polke, the vertiginous tales of never-ending books and 1001 nights. |
