about this website:
The current purpose of this mini-site is to provide a testing ground for work in progress on 'Songs of Garden Guitars'. As the material is updated, friends and colleagues will be invited to listen to these pieces (four in total) and give their response. Placing of material here manifests a second stage in the development of this work, the first stage being the recording, composition and testing of ideas in a determinedly 'offline' mode. Accordingly, there will always be more material being worked on than is presented here. Begun 1st April 2011, the initial pattern of working is listed on my blog: http://pralbum.blogspot.com/2012/04/diary-of-work-on-sogg.html

The likely outcome for this material is a CD ROM release containing music and text but I thought it might be useful to model some webpages here to help plan out the presentation of this material both in terms of text and visual ideas.

about this work:
It is my intention to take inspiration from the structure of birdsong (i.e. how it is performed rather than necessarily the sound of it) to produce a set of indeterminate pieces that are formed largely from guitar improvisations. In so doing I want produce a particular aesthetic experience - one that encourages 'close' listening - and also explore the possibilities of structuring Parallel Music (q.v.) in effective, creative ways.

None of the work here is tied too closely to any particular study of birds or birdsong -but future works could be. The focus is on guitar improv - with 'birds as ideas' rather than 'birds as species'.

N.B. I sometimes refer to 'Gtr Brds' or 'Brd Gtrs' when I discuss making these pieces; these phrases allude to a poetic rather than mimetic practice. In this sense, 'a bird made out of guitars' and a 'guitar made out of birds' are closer in meaning than logic would suggest...
